5 benefits of swimming

March 7, 2019 by Jenna Leave a Comment

As kids, many of us love to swim. We love nothing more than splashing around in the sea or playing in the pool. We even enjoy sitting in a few inches of water in a paddling pool in the garden. Even if you never had lessons or learned how to swim properly, you might still have enjoyed spending time in the water in the summer. Most kids do.

Unfortunately, as we get older, this love can be lost. As a teenager, you might have become self-conscious and tend to avoid the water. Or, you might have just gotten out of the habit as life got in the way. This is a shame, as swimming has so many benefits, and you can always take adult swimming classes if you need to learn how. Let’s take a look at some of the main advantages of swimming, even if you already enjoy other exercises.

It’s Easy on Your Body

Unfortunately, injuries happen. Especially as we get older and our bodies weaken. When we’re injured, or suffering from a condition that affects our joints, exercise can be hard. Running, or even walking can put pressure on your joints, and you can quickly feel your energy levels, your fitness and your stamina start to decline. You might find that you gain weight and that you struggle to recover from your injury.

Swimming can offer the perfect solution, especially if it’s a long term problem. Swimming is easy on your joints and muscles, as the water offers support while providing the resistance that you need to get a good workout.

It’s a Fantastic Full Body Workout

Most exercises focus on a particular part of your body. You have to do different things to get a full workout and build your strength evenly. Swimming does it all. You use your arms and legs to propel yourself through the water, and your core, back and neck to balance your body. Swimming is a brilliant full body workout that also increases your stamina and boosts your energy levels.

It’s Fun

Swimming doesn’t have to be an intense workout. It can just be good fun. Swim with friends, chatting as you slowly swim lengths and you are still working your body much more than you would be sat in a coffee shop. Enjoy swimming with your kids, splashing around in the water, which, even in play is providing resistance and working your body.

It’s an Easy Way into Exercise

Starting exercise, or getting back into it after a long break, can be tough. It can be overwhelming, and you might struggle to motivate yourself. If it’s too hard, you are more likely to either give up or hurt yourself.

Swimming can be the perfect way to get back into exercise. It works your body and boosts your stamina without having to be difficult. It’s a great way to build up to other things.

It Can be Good for Your Posture
Posture is an essential part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Good posture can help your confidence and make you appear slimmer. It can reduce back pain and help you to get a good night’s sleep. Having great posture can also improve your performance at other exercises. Swimming can be an excellent way to improve your posture, by stretching your back, working your shoulders and increasing your core strength.
