Religion is a powerful thing. Between religion and science there have been many things which have shaped the world as we know it today, and Christianity in particular has been a huge driving force for good in the world. When we look into our faith and the impact it has had on society, we see so much compassion, love and understanding in the world around us.
Faith is something which has been a powerful force in our lives for a long time, and whether we practice the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, Buddhism or Judaism there are lots of influential figures who have helped us to shape the world into a more forgiving place. Today we are taking a look at some of the most influential and inspiring people in Christianity.
- William Tyndale (1494-1536)
William Tyndale was an English scholar who worked on the Bible throughout the entirety of his life. He spent a long time studying the good book and sharing it with the world in different languages to allow everyone to enjoy faith and get their fill of the Lord’s word. The issue he faced was the fact that translating the Bible was considered a huge crime, and he could have been killed for the work he performed. However, undeterred from his mission, he moved to Germany where he was able to write freely and he created many translations of the bible to allow more and more people to access faith in their own homes.
- George Whitefield (1714-1770)
George Whitefield was a minister in England and he was also a preacher of the Christian faith. Due to the lack of mass communication in this era of history, this man had to shout louder and with more character than ever before to get his point across and show his love for the faith. During his lifetime he preached 70,000 sermons and he preached beyond the UK and into other parts of the world. His influence and ability to captivate the hearts and minds of people is what set him apart from the rest and this is why he is seen as a crucial figure in the faith even to this day.
- William Wilberforce (1759-1833)
When we talk about people who had an impact on the world in a big way, we look into the changes they made to the way people thought and whether or not they were able to influence the future. Well, when we talk about influencing the future we can’t not mention William Wilberforce. He was a politician who was incredibly wealthy, but instead of using his wealth for selfish causes, he devoted his life to trying to abolish slavery. For him, slavery was an abomination and he worked hard to show the world that every human should be treated equally and with respect. After a long battle and over 12.5 million slaves being brought to the USA, he finally managed to change the tide in 1807 when the slave trade was abolished. Slavery was totally eradicated in 1833, but William died just days after.
- Michael Faraday (1791-1867)
There are many different ways that Christians have impacted the world, and for this next man, he managed to bring together 2 opposing forces in a beautiful way. Science and Religion have always been seen as two sides of the same coin, however, science and religion don’t have to work against each other. Michael Faraday was one of the most influential scientists of his time and without him, there wouldn’t be a world like we know today. Electricity is an energy source which we use constantly in this day and age, and he was the one who made this possible. His discoveries included electrical transformers and generators as well as a whole host of things we still use today. Who said science and faith couldn’t work hand in hand?
