If you think the hype about essential oils is just a phase, think again. I’ll admit that I’ve been a bit resistant to the craze, even though I love the idea of using nature to treat physical ailments.
One of my kiddos used to have several warts on his hands, which would not go away with the typical over-the-counter treatments or freezing at the doctor. Then a friend recommended this stuff called thuja— a plant derivative mixed with petroleum jelly. Bam! Warts gone. It makes sense to me that the God who created our bodies also created what we needed to help keep us healthy.
Last weekend I was carrying my curling iron from the bathroom into
my room, when the still-hot iron hit my arm. Ugh. I grabbed some ice, holding it to the burn. As long as the ice was on it, it felt okay. But as soon as I took the ice off, the burning sensation continued.
My sister saw me holding ice to my arm, and when I explained to her what happened, she handed me a vial of lavender essential oil. I rubbed some straight onto the burn and BAM! Pain gone! It was literally THAT instantaneous. Throughout the afternoon I kept looking at the burn, amazed that it didn’t hurt.
My sister suggested that I may need apply more oil later on, but I never did. The burn never blistered. I have a little bit of a scab, but it’s smooth and healing beautifully. I’m still amazed. In my 40-some odd years, I’ve managed to burn myself many times, and have never had a burn heal so effortlessly. I’ve noticed in the
past few years that I actually don’t heal as quickly as I did when I was younger– with the exception of this now nearly-healed burn.
So tonight when my niece was brushing her teeth and banged her shin in the bathroom, developing an instant bruise– I grabbed the lavender. The pain alleviated, she hopped into bed.
Yes, there’s a lot of hype about essential oils. It’s the new hip hop happening thing right now. But the hype is deserved, and you owe it to yourself to give them a shot.
