What kind of gifts should you get someone who enjoys fitness and outdoor activities? Even if it’s someone you picked out of a hat for a company Christmas party, or a family gift exchange for that cousin you don’t know very well, here are a few suggestions for stocking sutffer-friendly gifts for the athlete.
1. FitBit Bracelets. So many people have a FitBit these days, and they’re a little pricey for a Christmas gift exchange, but interchangeable bracelets are very affordable– you can find really cute ones if you’re looking for a gift that costs $10 or less.
2. Socks. No one can ever have enough athletic socks, and runners can wear them out pretty quickly. My favorites are the Adidas Cushioned Low Cut athletic socks for men and women. People with more personality might also enjoy fun, festive, colorful compression socks as a gift, if you’re willing to spend a little extra money. These are great for your ankles and lower legs while running or biking, because they sort of hug your muscles, and help prevent swelling.
3. RoadID. Accidents happen. And most of us don’t cary a purse with us when we head out for a run or go hiking. I wear my RoadID bracelet all the time. It has my name, and my parents’ phone numbers, just in case something happens to me while I’m on a run, or even just driving to the store. It also indicates that I have a penicillin allergy, so that if I’m hit by a bus and can’t talk, a paramedic has that one vital piece of information. I also suggest putting your blood type on there. These are great stocking stuffers for athletes and non-athletes alike.
4. Key Holder. Many runners have a trick for carrying a car key with them when they run, but I see a lot of folks who still set their key on top of a tire. That can work if you only run races out in the boonies, but we’re living in a day and age where that’s just not smart. And there are other times you may need to take just a key with you, and need a place to store it so you don’t lose it– like a gym locker key, or the key to your bike lock. The KeyFix is a PERFECT gift for any active person who needs a safe place to store a key.
5. Headband. But not just any headband will do. It’s not enough for a headband to be cute– it has to work, and by work, I mean it has to keep my hair out of my face, and it has to stay on my head. It helps when the headband has a silicone lining. I’ve also found that getting the headband wet before slipping it onto my noggin helps it stay in place better.
6. Electrolytes. Athletes try to keep things pretty simple. I love these FIZZ electrolyte tablets from Hammer Nutrition. You plop one into your water bottle before or after your run instead of carting around a big bottle of an electrolyte that’s full of artificial colors and crud you don’t need.
7. Ear Bud Holder. Ear buds are kind of a personal thing– I’m pretty particular about the kind I get. However, I’m tired of untangling them before I head out for a run, especially if I’ve stuck them in the pocket of my gym bag. I’m getting a BudKeeper earphone case for each of my kids for Christmas. There’s a carabiner clip so you can attach it to your bag or key fob and have it always at the ready.
